Mamelodi Sundowns star Grant Kekana has now become one of the first few players in South Africa to wear black nail polish, a trend that has been seen with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo. Here's a look!

The story

The centre-back has had a lot to celebrate over the course of the 2023/24 season, as his side clinched the inaugural African Football League title in November 2023 and he won a bronze medal with Bafana Bafana at the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Last week, Kekana and company clinched their seventh league title in a row after humiliating Kaizer Chiefs 5-1 to defend their DStv Premiership title.

Following the result, Kekana took to Instagram to show of his black-painted hand nails, which led to a few reactions from his club and national team colleagues. Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa commented "manincure", to which Kekana responded by asking if he would also like one.

Makgopa amusingly replied: "No way, bro."

In February, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo went viral online after fans noticed that he painted his toes nails in black polish as well. It was not the first time that the Al Nassr superstar was seen with painted nails, as he had previously been spotted in 2023 as well.

However, it has since been reported that there's a rather more specific reason why the Portugal icon paints his toes nail in black.

According to LadBible, it is reported that athletes can be really susceptible to fungal infections around their toenails due to the fact that they spend hours each day sweating in their football boots.

The problem is said to be more prevalent among footballers, as their feet take extensive trauma during matches and training due to getting tackled and stepped on. Therefore, it is reported that Ronaldo paints his toenails to protect them from fungi and bacteria.

In Kekana's case, it may just simply be a matter of style and self-care.
