Kaizer Chiefs have announced that decorated goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is set to be honoured at the club's final home game of the season against Polokwane City.

In what could very well be his last match as a Kaizer Chiefs player, the experienced 36-year-old is set to be celebrated before Chiefs take on Rise and Shine in their penultimate DStv Premiership match of the season, the Soweto Giants announced through their socials.

Khune's current deal with Amakhosi runs until the end of June and in a statement released by Chiefs at the start of the season, it was said in no uncertain terms this would be the legendary goalkeeper's last contract at Chiefs as a player.

The club hierarchy is understood to be ready to hand Khune a role within the club's structures. The shot-stopper, meanwhile, has insisted that he still has more left in the tank but does not see himself playing for any other team.

"I cannot invest all my time and energy for the past 25 years to one club and then come my 26th year I start entertaining other Ideas or other clubs," Khune said, in November 2023.

"I told myself I want to play here until I hang [up] my gloves and I think I’ve done tremendously well when it comes to that.

"If I’m forced to retire at the end of the season, I can retire peacefully, but I don’t see or have ever seen myself representing any other brand except  Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana."

If Khune does bow out of the game, it will be with an extraordinary career to show for it. 'Spider-Kid' enjoyed a decorated career that included individual and team accolades like the PSL Player'a Player of the Season awards in 2007/08 and 2012/13, PSL Footballer of the Season in 2012/13 and three league titles, among other trophies.
