Egyptian media have pointed out a "curse" broken by South African Percy Tau after Al Ahly's latest encounter.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion attacker found the back of the net for the first time since December last year in the Red Devils' 2-1 win over Ismaily in an Egyptian Premier League encounter on Wednesday.

Tau opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, when he received the ball outside of the box before turning and taking a shot that deflected off a defender, leaving the goalkeeper helpless to stop it from going into the back of the net.

It was the Bafana Bafana star's first goal since he scored against Japanese outfit Urawa Reds in a match for third place at the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup.

Egyptian news outlet Kooora has since described the ending of his "long abstinence from scoring" as getting "rid of the curse of AFCON", a tournament in which he scored only once for South Africa before returning to Egypt.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns forward now has five goals in six league appearances for Ahly this season.

Tau has also now started his side's two latest games, which comes after he was ruled out of action on 29 March with what is believed to have been an ankle injury.

Reports also suggested that he had a fallout with Al Ahly boss Marcel Koller, but his importance to the side has been highlighted in recent times.

The Red Devils will be hoping there are more goals to come from the South African as they look to close the gap on league leaders Pyramids, whom they trail by 14 points.

Koller's men, however, have five games in hand.

The Egyptian giants' next encounter will be against El Gouna on Saturday, after which they will host fifth-placed Al Ittihad.
