Liverpool suffered their first defeat in the UEFA Europa League group stages after going down 3-2 to Ligue 1 side Toulouse on Thursday evening.

Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher came in for Alisson Becker, while there were also starts for Alexis MacAllister, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott.

Jurgen Klopp's charges looked to make a fast start, with defender Joe Gomez getting on the end of Cody Gakpo's free-kick and seeing his header hit the woodwork after just three minutes.

Despite dominating for most of the first half, the visitors had to wait until the 30th minute for their next big chance as goalkeeper Guillaume Restes' poor clearance landed at the feet of Ben Doak, who saw his goal-bound volley saved.

The French side did get the opening goal just over ten minutes to the interval, with Aron Donnum's shot deflecting past Kelleher after the attacker robbed Kostas Tsimikas of the ball high up the pitch.

Even after introducing Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold at the start second half, Toulouse went on to bag a second goal in the 58th minute as Thijs Dallinga turned home Vincent Sierro's cross.

Klopp's charges received a lifeline after 73 minutes when Alexander-Arnold's cross cause all sorts of problems, as Cristian Cásseres Jr ended up heading the ball into his own net.

Three minutes later, the Ligue 1 outfit managed to restore their two-goal cushion thanks to a first-time finish from Frank Magri after Kelleher was unable to hold on to Suazo's low cross.

Diogo Jota did set up nervy finish when he pulled another goal back for the Reds on 89 minutes and while Jarell Amorin Quansah looked to have equalise for the visitors, the celebrations were short as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) spotted a handball in the build up, handing Toulouse victory.
