Shalulile to shake Mudau and Nomvethe

Mamelodi Sundowns gunslinger Peter Shalulile has brought himself within a stone's throw of having his name engraved with a bigger font in matters pertaining to goals playing for a South African top league club.

Shalulile has spent most of the 2023/24 campaign not having the best of seasons which included 10 games without a goal but is still within a stride of re-writing history.

Just like his employers, Shalulile is uprooting new records with the club's seventh consecutive title already in the bag.

Most important is the all-time scorers top mark of 123 goals that Siyabonga Nomvete has kept to himself without worry for over a decade.

Shalulile has brought himself to 116 goals and counting.

A goal count of eight is all that the Namibian now needs to relegate Nomvete's legendary name from top of the list into second.

If that is to happen this season, then it means the 30-year-old must do it in the four games that are remaining – three in the league and the Nedbank Cup final on June 1.

Next target is at least 20 goals for four seasons in a row which will surpass what Daniel Mudau delivered in his prime as a free scoring striker at Sundowns where he spent just about all his career.

Mudau reached the magical 20 figure for three consecutive campaigns (1998/99 – 26 goals, 1999/00 – 21, 2000/01 – 23).

Shalulile's number read 22, 30, and 23 in the last three seasons and has pushed up to 14 so far this season.

Another six goals this season will take the Sundowns number 38 to new levels 20 goals for four consecutive seasons.
