Promotion delight: 'They never gave us a trophy, but...'

Returning Betway Premiership, Durban City forward Ruzaigh Gamildien has opened up on their promotion finally confirmed.

What was supposed to be a celebratory moment for The Team of Choice, after they won the Motsepe Foundation Championship by five points, was turned into chaos ahead of their final matchday.

City were not presented with their trophy, after beating Cape Town Spurs in their final matchday, after JDR Stars made a protest to the PSL's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) that Siziso Magawana was not properly registered, following his move from Leruma United, who had bought the status of Marumo Gallants in the previous off season.

The matter dragged on for weeks, largely due to Spurs also lodging a similar protest, which was taken to SAFA for Arbitration.

On Monday, the matter came to finality, after Durban City confirmed on their social media platforms that JDR and The Urban Warriors' case was dismissed with costs.

As a result, City can finally look forward to the return to the Betway Premiership for the 2025/26 season.

"Finally! We weren't okay with what was happening but what can we do?" Gamildien reacted to their promotion uncertainties now over, speaking to KickOff.com.

"We did our part on the field and at the end of the day, they made the right decision."

The former Chippa United, Moroka Swallows and Royal AM striker carried on and explained why they celebrated, even though the PSL could not do a trophy presentation and handover.

"They never gave us the trophy on the day but if you look at the log standings, we were still on top," the well-travelled striker said.

"We were celebrating our performances throughout the season.

"I'm happy for the chairman (Farouk Kadodia) that we brought the team back where it belongs and the loyal supporters that stuck with the team, even though we had to relocate to another city."

The veteran forward also added that his immediate focus would be to keep The Team of Choice in the Betway Premiership for the upcoming campaign.

"Save the status and leave the team in the Betway Premiership for many more years to come," Gamildien said of his immediate ambitions.
