Mailula's absence against FC Porto 'explained'

With Cassius Mailula having missed Wydad Athletic Club's recent friendly against FC Porto, the reason for his absence has now emerged.

Mailula was a notable absentee during Wydad's 1–0 loss to Porto on Saturday.

The South African was not even named on the bench, while his compatriot Thembinkosi Lorch started the match.

According to Barlamanesport.com, Mailula was left out of the squad after suffering from a slight fever caused by a mild cold.

It is reported that Wydad’s medical staff have since placed the 23-year-old under special treatment, as they aim to have him fully recovered ahead of the club’s trip to the United States for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

In other news, Mailula’s market value has recently risen.

According to Transfermarkt's latest update on 28 May, Mailula is now valued at €1 million (approximately R20 million) following a productive season in Morocco.

This makes the Limpopo-born star the 10th most valuable player in the Botola Pro 1 and the third most valuable within the Wydad squad.

Mailula’s highest recorded market value was €1.2 million (approximately 24 million) in April 2024, while he was still with his parent club, Toronto FC in Canada.
