Ramovic: The challenge with skillful Maduna

TS Galaxy head coach Sead Ramovic has revealed the challenge confronting him in efforts of reviving the once-promising talent of Sphesihle Maduna at his new club.

At one point in his career, Maduna was among the brightest prospects in South African football.

The attacking midfielder came through the AmaZulu FC development ranks and had his breakthrough season in 2019/20, where he made 25 appearances, starting 22 of those.

By age 22, he has already racked up over 70 appearances since making his debut in 2018.

However, since then, the journey has been headed on a downward spiral.

After several months of inaction, Maduna was eventually released by Usuthu in January.

He joined Cape Town Spurs, who had a disastrous campaign in the topflight and were subsequently relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The now 24-year-old has been handed another chance, this time in the form of TS Galaxy.

He made his debut in a 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay FC over the weekend.

"We have shown in the last two years where we brought a lot of players, brought the best out of them," pointed out Ramovic.

"If we didn't, they wouldn't have gone to the best clubs in the league.

"Maduna is a very, very skillful player, but he didn't play too much in the last two, three seasons and now we have to slowly adapt him in terms of the intensity, space and everything because my team, we like to attack the opponents in every moment if we have the ball or lose [it], or if the opponent has it, we want it.

"I believe that defending is the first offensive action we have to do. This is what we do, but it takes a lot of fitness.

"But he is a great guy, he has a great character, and hopefully, he can continue to improve. He can be one of our key players."
