An African legend is now embroiled in controversy after waking up from a coma following a near-fatal car crash he was involved in earlier this month.

Former Zambia captain Rainford Kalaba was left in critical condition after a vehicle he was in collided head-on with a truck two weeks ago.

The woman who was driving the Mercedes-Benz he was in died instantly in the crash, while the ex-winger was rushed to hospital.

With authorities reportedly confirming that the accident happened due to improper overtaking, Kalaba narrowly escaped with his life, although he suffered internal injuries that kept him in a coma for days.

Last week, Lusaka University Hospital announced that the 37-year-old had come out of the coma after several days of intensive care.

"We are happy to report that former Ravens captain Rainford Kalaba is fully conscious. He has had his first meal and he already speaks correctly. He therefore left the artificial coma. However, the medical team continues to provide careful monitoring and care," hospital manager Nzeba Chanda said, according to Afrika Foot.

However, an investigation has since been opened after an individual visited Kalaba in hospital, took a picture with him and posted it on social media, an act that goes against the rules of the institution.

"We noted with regret the publication on social media of the photo of Mr. Kalaba with a man. Upon admission, we reminded the public of the need to respect privacy and confidentiality, in accordance with the UTH-ADULTES Patient Charter of Rights.

"It should therefore be noted that the publication of this photo constitutes a violation of patients' rights, since it was not carried out by the public relations department of the hospital and the patient did not give consent."

The matter remains ongoing, with further updates expected.

The 38-year-old made more than 100 appearances for his country, and famously won the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia, as well as the 2014/15 CAF Champions League with TP Mazembe.
