PSL club chasing youngster from Pirates Cup

A PSL club could swoop on eMalahleni United striker Kwanele Alfred after an impressive showing during the Pirates Cup held in Johannesburg during the Easter Holidays.

Lerumo Lions were crowned Pirates Cup champions after beating Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the final on Monday.

Lions edged out Wits on their way to the final, while Pirates defeated the University of Johannesburg on penalties to set up a meeting with the North West-based outfit.

The new champions were making their maiden appearance in the tournament, with striker Bonolo Mokoma going on to win the Player of the Tournament award.

Alfred could join Thokozani Sibanyoni at TS Galaxy with the latter having signed with the Mpumalanga-based side from eMalahleni United during last year’s edition of the Pirates Cup held in Gauteng.

“There are few teams that have shown interest in the youngster from eMalahleni United. Galaxy is the only team that has made contact with the player. But so far, nothing concrete or an offer has been put forward to his team,” said a source.

eMalahleni United boss, Mandla Bodibe, says his team has not yet received offers from any PSL team for the services of Alfred.

“So far, we have not received any offer. The tournament just finished yesterday. However, it's always our mission to go to the Pirates Cup and expose the talent from Mpumalanga. We already have a few players attached to PSL clubs, and it will be great to see Kwanele also playing his football at a professional level,”, Bodibe said, responding to a KickOff.com query.

Pirates currently have defender Dimpho Madalane on their books, who was also signed from eMalahleni United last year. The player affectionately known as ‘Khalabemgeza’ is training with the Soweto giants’ senior team.
