Europe-based African star misses own wedding, sends brother instead

An African striker has revealed that he sent his brother to take his place as the groom at his own wedding due to his new European club insisting that he shows up for training earlier.

Sierra Leone international Mohamed Buya Turay was reportedly unable to be present for his own wedding after joining Swedish outfit Malmo in July.

The player officially signed for the club on 22 July following a two-year stint in the Chinese top flight with Hebei China Fortune and then Henan Songshan Longme.

The Allsvenskan League began on 2 April and concluded on 6 November, meaning that the player joined Malmo mid-season, so the centre-forward had to begin his stint immediately after his arrival.

Unfortunately for Turay, his move clashed with his wedding, so he called on his brother to represent him at the marriage ceremony back home in Sierra Leone.

"We got married on 21 July in Sierra Leone," Turay told Swedish daily newspaper Afton Bladet.

"But I wasn't there because Malmo asked me to come here earlier.

"We took the pictures in advance. So it looks like I was there but I wasn't. My brother had to represent me at the wedding itself.

"But I will try to get her to Sweden and Malmo now so she can be close to me. She will live here with me."

The player previously made headlines in November 2019, when he claimed he had suffered an injury as a result of black magic during a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho.

"The native doctor told me the cause of the toe injury was because I stepped on a spiritual object in Leone Stars camp, put there for me by a person who wanted me to get elephantiasis, thereby destroying my career," the 27-year-old told BBC Sport Africa.

"She further told me that if I had gone to the hospital for treatment or had used conventional medicine to try and heal the toe, that would have ended my career."

The striker has spent most of his career so far plying his trade in Sweden, and in the 2018/19 season, he won the league title with Djurgardens IF as well as the Golden Boot for the 15 goals he scored in that campaign.
