Nabi raises hopes in ending Chiefs’ ‘allergy’ to silverware

Nasreddine Nabi is aware of the expectations and desperation written on the Kaizer Chiefs faithful’s faces, with two wins being all that is needed in the Nedbank Cup to end the trophy drought.

The sound of the Nedbank Cup semi-finals bell this weekend will be a reminder about silverware related issues at Chiefs, with the club having sunk to a decade in darkness.

Chiefs will take the short trip to Tshwane on Sunday (18h00) at Loftus Versfeld where Mamelodi Sundowns will be waiting as the opposition.

It is a game worth more than gold for Nabi in view of the circumstances that have made this great club

That Chiefs have only won once against Sundowns in the last 15 meetings will not matter just as the fact that AmaKhosi have had 37 failed trophy attempts since they last lifted silverware.

Chiefs have come short in the league 10 times considering that they are already out of contention for this season, then MTN8 (seven times), Carling Knockout (seven times), and Nedbank Cup (nine times).

They have also been involved in the CAF Champions League twice without lifting the trophy and came stuck in the CAF Confederation Cup during the 2018/19 season.

“So, for this game, I’m not only thinking about myself,” points out Nabi.

“I also think about for our fans, the club and for our players as it is a big opportunity for to write new history for the team.

“Why not to qualify for the final and win this cup and it has been a long time since we won a trophy.

“So, it is a big opportunity for us to write history for the team,” he says.

The Tunisian Belgian comes up against The Brazilians without a win in his last four.

“To be honest with you I can’t say we are in a good situation or great situation.

“I think in the last three games were difficult for us because from the beginning we have always had problems when we play against these teams that we are normally better than.

“So, always, we find problems when we play against this kind of team, but we discussed together to find the problem and we try to correct the situation.

“We have had a lot of meetings with the players and between us as the technical team.

“But to be honest we are now in a good way, and it is now in the past because we have discussed it and tried to sort it.

“We are now concentrating on the future with games against Sundowns.

“We have played against Cape Town City, Golden Arrows, and Richards and normally we should get nine points in these three games, but I think we take our responsibility in not winning these games after analyzing all the games.

“Between us and the players we know what the situation is as we have discussed it and now what we think about is Sunday’s game against Sundowns in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup,” explains Nabi.
