Why Chiefs could face second-string Downs in Nedbank Cup

With Mamelodi Sundowns set for another big game against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, whether they can cope has become a topic of discussion.

Sundowns will have little time to recover and prepare for the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Chiefs, especially considering they played away in Tunisia on Tuesday evening, in the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.

In comparison, Chiefs had a whole week to prepare for the titanic clash, with no midweek fixture, and their last encounter having been a 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy last Saturday.

Considering all the traveling, Miguel Cardoso's men may only start preparations late in the week, and in addition, the clash is an unwelcome distraction.

They will have one eye on the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final against Al Ahly next weekend as well.

Will The Brazilians be up for it then on Sunday?

"Last night, they played 10 minutes extra, so it's gonna be a little bit tough, but let's see. I think the coach is gonna make some changes here and there," explained Brent Carelse.

"But overall, I think the boys will be ready, they will be up for it. Obviously they play a lot of games and I think they are used to that pressure and intensity.

"Yes, it is tough, but recovery is very important and I know obviously at Sundowns they will focus on that, getting the players recovered quickly.

"But at the end of the day, as a player you always want to play. So, yes, you played three, four days ago, but the players would want to be in the game. It's a big game, I'm sure they will be ready," he added.

The match is at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, kicking off at 18:00.
