Downs awaits: 'Even if Chiefs have to go play dirty'

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite has opened up on whether the side has a chance against Mamelodi Sundowns in the do-or-die Nedbank Cup semi-final.

Chiefs will visit Sundowns for the much-anticipated Nedbank Cup clash on at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday (18:00).

They go into the game with their morale down, on the back of four games without tasting victory.

The Brazilians, on the other hand, have their confidence sky-high after qualifying for the CAF Champions League semi-finals.

The gap between the two giants is huge in the league, as the Tshwane giants are also perched at the top of the Betway Premiership standings, while Nasreddine Nabi's men are placed eighth.

However, Mashamaite believes the visitors have a chance and should be motivated by the hunger to win a trophy and salvage their season.

"It's possible, anything is possible on the day. We have to admit that Chiefs need a trophy, just to gain the confidence of their loyal supporters," shares Mashamaite.

"I mean, they have made it this far in the semi-final, so against Sundowns it's not going to be easy. Sundowns is formidable, they are miles ahead in terms of quality.

"But at the end of the day, if they apply themselves, commit themselves to going past Sundowns, it is quite possible. So, even if they have to go play dirty..." says the Senwabarwana-born man.

The former Amakhosi skipper stressed the importance of winning a trophy, in a campaign that has flattered the deceive once again for the men in Gold and Black.

"And by dirty I mean, be conservative, maybe drag them to the penalties. At the end of the day, once you win Nedbank Cup, no one is going to remember how you got there.

"So, it's semi-final, two more games and you can at least say you've salvaged this season by winning something and it will create so much confidence and positive atmosphere going into next season.

"So, winning that one trophy can lead to a whole lot of changes," he concludes.
