With home advantage in Tanzania, Davids' team produced a remarkable comeback, scoring twice without reply to level the aggregate score and push the tie into extra-time—before ultimately winning 4-1 in a dominant penalty shootout.
As the celebrations began, the players were handed a further reason to rejoice.
Instant cash rewards were handed out on the pitch in front of thousands of fans at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
According to The Citizen Tanzania, the bonus came courtesy of a pledge by the country's president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who promised to pay Simba Tanzanian Sh10 million (approx. R73,000) for every goal scored against Al Masry.
In total, Simba received Tanzanian Sh30 million (approx. R219,000) for their two goals and the shootout victory.
Simba will now face South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals, with the first leg set for 20 April in Tanzania and the return leg on 27 April in South Africa.
