The PSL's longest-serving player – Vuyo Mere – will find his name becoming a subject of interest as his latest playing contract comes to an end.

Mere's deal at TS Galaxy runs up on Sunday, June 30, and having played only once last season, signals are that he could be lined up for a non-playing role at the club.

There have been suggestions that he could be involved in the club's reserve team.

Mere was brought in to play half-an-hour in his hometown of Bloemfontein in the 3-0 Nedbank Cup win over lower league club D'General in March.

That appearance came just days after he turned 40 on March 5.

Prior to that game, Mere had last played over a year ago when he did duty in the same competition against Amavarara.

In taking to the field against D'General, Mere became only the eighth player to get minutes with a topflight club after turning 40 throughout the history of the PSL.

What is remarkable for Mere is that he has played professional football since the 2001/02 season when he broke through at Hellenic.

Since then, he has been to Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits before the switch to Galaxy in January 2022.

Interestingly for Mere is that while he only played once last season, he was a regular in the matchday squad.

He was an unused substitute for 29 games with his dressing room presence a huge factor in inspiring the team.

Notable is that Mere's club boss Timothy Sukazi was still a law student at the University of Cape Town when his career began under Steve Haupt at Hellenic.
