Chiefs backtrack on defender

Kaizer Chiefs defender Edmilson Dove has been recalled from national team duty ahead of the expiry of his contract on June 30.

Dove's contract at Chiefs is up at the end of June and, instead of returning for club duty this week, had been allowed to go for international duty at the Hollywoodbets COSAFA Cup.

The 29-year-old was due to lead Mozambique at the regional competition, which earned him his move to Amakhosi two years ago.

In going for national team duty, Dove had gotten silent response about matters relating to the extension of his contract.

However, according to the Federacao Mocambicana de Futebol (Mozambique Football Federation), Chiefs have recalled Dove.

This comes after this website highlighted how Dove will be hoping to earn another contact elsewhere using the COSAFA Cup.

"Mozambican international left-back Edmilson Dove is out for the COSAFA Cup, which starts today and runs until July 7 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

"Edmilson was supposed to face South Africa tonight, but he has not been allowed by his club, Kaizer Chiefs.

"In response to the letter/request from FMF, sent last June 19, the club only spoke yesterday, the 25th, at 15:50.

"FMF is sorry for the late response," reads a statement translated to English from Portuguese by the Mozambican FA.

In his first season, Dove had 25 appearances and one goal, while his second was a drop after playing 18 games and scoring once.

Throughout the past campaign, he faced it all at Chiefs from injury, sitting on the bench, wearing the armband, scoring, serving four yellow cards suspension, and ultimately being red-carded twice.

The first sending off was against Moroka Swallows in March, while the second was against TS Galaxy.

With the second red card, it has come at a cost of missing the last three games of the season for Chiefs as per the rules of the League.
