Former Chiefs player: I killed my grandmother five times

In this week's edition, our Secret Footballer shares with KickOff how he 'killed' his gogo one time too many due to his fear of flights – otherwise known as aerophobia.

The former Kaizer Chiefs, Platinum Stars and SuperSport United player says a lot is happening behind the scenes in the PSL when footballers want to avoid traveling to away matches.

"You won't believe what players do to prevent long trips to places such as Cape Town just to avoid flying, and I'm one of them," he admits.

"I don't know how many times I killed my grandmother – I think five times – just to avoid flying to Cape Town or Durban.

"I was not the only one though who used that trick. I remember at Platinum Stars, our goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela used to do the same thing [laughs], and one day he forgot he had already killed all his four grandmothers and told the management his grandmother was lying sick in hospital.

"Some of my teammates would even fake injuries," continues the Secret Footballer.

He says local stars who have this fear are countless in number…

"Myself included," he adds, before breaking into a fit of laughter.

"When the aeroplane took off, some would grab the seats in front of them with both hands, close their eyes, and scream like women.

"At SuperSport United, I used to play with this boy… his name was Mpho Mbebe. To say he was scared of flying is an understatement. Every time we took off, Mpho Mbebe would scream like a baby [laughs], and the others would calm him down. But he eventually got used to flying in the end.

"So, to avoid such situations, some of us would fake injuries or kill our grandmothers [laughs], and the club management would understand, especially if the team was owned by white people. You know how sensitive whites are when it comes to family.

"Soccer players are very dodgy. You find that the team is doing very well, and out of the blue, its trusted players fake injury. Flying is not for everyone."
