'Leremi & Cheeseboy were always up to mischief'

In this edition of Locker Room Secrets, former Orlando Pirates attacker Tyren Arendse reveals how youngsters of his time had no airs and graces about them, only wearing flip-flops and club merchandise.

The 43-year-old retired star transports readers back to the 2004/05 season when the Buccaneers change room was abuzz with a colourful mix of characters and personalities who know what and when to say and do.

Who was always late?

"The late Gift Leremi. He was always the last one to run into the dressing room. He always seemed like he was coming from somewhere. He was always busy. Sometimes he would sneak into training without the coach noticing."

Any interesting rituals before you played?

"Muti was always a thing at the club, they always had a guy that was around."

Who was the jokester?

"There were a lot of them. [Lebohang] 'Cheeseboy' Mokoena and the late Gift Leremi, the two of them were always up to mischief.

"The guy they always teased is Lucky Lekgwathi because they knew Lucky didn't take nonsense. They knew it was easy to get him angry. They were always on his case at training.

"And obviously, there was also Onyekachi Okonkwo, who was also a jokester. There was also the crazy Lelo Mbele."

Who was the singer?

"It was always a different guy, there was never that one particular person assigned to lead songs. There were a few of them."

Who was the best- and worst-dressed?

"Felix Muamba Musasa, the Congolese, was one of the guys who liked to dress nicely. There were times also when Gift wanted to, and he did. And Stanton Fredericks, you know... he always dressed nicely.

"Lelo Mbele was one of the worst-dressed. He would come sometimes, and you would ask yourself: 'What is he wearing today?'

"But most of the boys that time didn't care how they dressed, especially the ones who came from development. They were always in flip-flops and tracksuits."

Who never showered?

"The younger boys, they never liked to shower. When I came there, there were about seven or eight of them who came from the development.

"Within five minutes after training, half of the guys have already left. The car park was half-empty  They never liked to shower."

Rate the coach's team talk:

"I only played under Kostadin Papic at Pirates, and when he left, [Milutin] 'Micho' Sredojevic came.

"But because I spent most of my time with Papic, I'd choose him. Yes, in the beginning, it was difficult to understand him.

"Sometimes he would say something, and you wouldn't even understand him. You would just say yes. Otherwise, it would be a problem to explain."
