Cardoso: Downs not looking at Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has had his say over Orlando Pirates' chances of wrestling the the league title from the Tshwane giants.

Sundowns tightened their grip on what could be an eighth consecutive league title with a 4-2 victory over TS Galaxy last Saturday, maintaining a lead of 12 points at the top of the table.

Tailing the defending champions is a never-say-die Pirates outfit, who have three games in behind. Should they win those, they would find themselves just three points shy of the men in Yellow and Blue.

Permutations may, of course, change pending the outcome of the latter's match against Sekhukhune United on Wednesday evening.

Cardoso insist he and his charges are not looking over their shoulder.

"I haven't even looked at the schedule of Pirates... I don't know," said the Portuguese mentor following the mauling of Galaxy at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

"Obviously, I know they have some games in hand, so they have to play them at some point.

"But I don't know.

"If we can win ours until then, eventually it can be an advantage, but if we also lose points, it will not be an advantage.

"So, let's wait and see.

"Let's try to keep our advantage – we gained it after we beat them, but two days later we lost three points away to Galaxy.

"So, we need to focus on our job, we need to continue to win games so that we can obviously, in the end, have a number of points that allow us to win [the title]. But there's a lot of games [still to play]," shared Cardoso.

By the time the final whistle sounds against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, The Brazilians could well have stretched their lead at the summit to 18 points, with Pirates' match against Marumo Gallants on the same day kicking off at 17:45.
