Liberia President and football icon George Weah makes surprise international return at 51

The African nation arranged an international friendly against Nigeria to retire the iconic number 14 shirt worn by the nations all-time record scorer.

However, fans were stunned when the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan striker led the line within the starting XI, nearly two decades since announcing his retirement.

The Liberia squad and Weah's former teammate, 48-year-old James Debbah, wore shirts bearing the message "Thank you King George".

Goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo helped Nigeria to a 2-0 lead before the hosts pulled one back through a penalty from former Mpumalanga Black Aces striker Kpah Sherman in the dying stages.

Weah, who scored 22 goals in 61 caps for The Lone Stars between 1987 and 2007 - was eventually substituted to a rapturous ovation with 11 minutes remaining.
