Marumo Gallants unseeded despite a gallant CAF effort

Marumo Gallants will make their maiden CAF Confederation Cup group stages as one of 10 clubs without points in the CAF 5-Year ranking.

The CAF 5-Year ranking points system is partly used for seeding purposes ahead of the group stages with the top four clubs enjoying the benefit of avoiding each other in the group stages.

Based on that system this year's CAF Confederation Cup Pot 1 has TP Mazembe (DR Congo – 43 points), Pyramids (Egypt – 34 points), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast – 8 points), and USM Alger (Algeria – 5 points).

Pot 2 has Motema Pembe (DR Congo – 3 points) and Young Africans (Tanzania – 0.5 points) while the rest of the clubs have not earned points in the past five years playing in CAF club competitions.

Also, without points and through to the group stages are Al Akhdar (Libya), ASFAR (Morocco), Future (Egypt), US Monastir (Tunisia), ASKO Kara (Togo), Rivers United (Nigeria), Real Bamako (Mali), Saint-Eloi Lupopo (DR Congo), and Diables Noirs (Congo Republic).

Familiar faces at some of the clubs that Marumo could meet include Fagrie Lakay at Pyramids.

ASKO Kara feature former Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, and Free State Stars attacking midfielder Dove Wome.

The draw for the group stages takes place on November 16 at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Strangely five North African clubs were knocked out in the Play-Off stages including holders RS Berkane who overcame Orlando Pirates in the final last year.

The other North Africans – the dominant region in CAF club football – knocked out on Wednesday are CS Sfaxien, Club Africain, Al Ahli Tripoli, and Al Nasr.
