Orlando Pirates in big money chase following CAF Confederation Cup win

Pirates are already guaranteed USD450 000 (approximately R7,266 million) for reaching the semi-final of the continent's second-tier club competition.

Following their 2-0 away win at Al Ahli Tripoli on Sunday, Pirates now carry the advantage towards reaching the final which will be contested against either TP Mazembe or RS Berkane on May 29.

Lifting the CAF Confederation Cup comes with a winners' cheque of USD1,25 million (approximately R20,156 million) while the runners-up walk away with USD625 000 (approximately R10,078 million).

Should The Bucs win the Confederation Cup, then they will contest for the USD200 000 (approximately R3,2 million) worth CAF Super Cup once-off final on August 5-7.

Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly could be the Super Cup opponents if the Egyptian giants defend their Champions League title.

Pirates will have reason to smile about the prizemoney compared to domestic earnings with Mamelodi Sundowns set to pocket R15 million as DStv Premiership champions.

However, The Brazilians have already banked R8 million from the MTN8, two Q-innovations earnings of R3 million, and R10,47 million for reaching the CAF Champions League quarterfinals while they will also earn either R2,5 or R7 million in the Nedbank Cup final.

Unfortunately for Pirates, if they win the Confederation Cup that will not earn them the promotion ticket to play in the Champions League next season.

According to the CAF regulations on the competition, winners of the Confederation Cup only acquire the ticket to defend their title the following season instead of moving up the ranks to play in the Champions League like what happens in Europe with winners of the Europa League securing the right to play in the Champions League the following season.

"The winner of CAF Confederation Cup must take part in the next edition of CAF Confederation Cup unless it is engaged in CAF Champions League of the same season," reads rule 13 in Section IV.
