Expensive Brazilian striker’s failed test

Mamelodi Sundowns' big money signing Arthur de Oliveira's debut has prompted question marks about the Brazilian's price tag and what he will bring to the domestic game.

Sales joined Sundowns on a transfer that was reported to be northwards of R60 million from Belgian second division Lommel SK, to provide an alternative to Peter Shalulile upfront.

Besides playing in the top two-tier leagues in Brazil where he only scored once, the 22-year-old ended his time in the Portuguese Primera Liga without goals from a dozen appearances.

His best returns came playing for Lommel in the Belgian second division last season with 10 goals to his name.

He also scored eight in his first spell in the Belgian promotional league which usually features the reserve teams of the big teams in that country.

Then enter Sundowns, where his arrival has come with a huge price tag by PSL standards.

Only The Brazilians have ever spent figures comparable to what they paid for Sales following their recent acquisitions of Marcelo Allende and Matias Esquivel.

On Wednesday evening, Sales was given over half an hour on debut in the MTN8 semi-final first leg defeat to Stellenbosch.

If it was chances in the box that the lanky forward needed to announce his arrival, then he was handed on a silver platter but failed to feast.

With Sundowns trailing and Manqoba Mngqithi on his feet on the bench, the new number nine was set through for an easy finish but couldn't beat Sage Stephens in goals for the visitors.

Sales will now know he has so much to make to rub off that missed opportunity at a club used to winning matches.

The Brazilians will get a second bite on Sunday at Moses Mabhida Stadium in the second leg of this MTN8 semi-final.

Having come on an expensive transfer, Sales will have to get used to having the microscope on him for the rest of the season at Sundowns.
