In this edition of Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Phelelani Mpangase.
Mpangase also played for the likes of Platinum Stars and SuperSport United.
Who was always late?
"At Mamelodi Sundowns it was Fanyana Dhladhla. He was traveling from Vaal to Chloorkop, and you know how slow the taxis can be, plus the traffic. He is married to a doctor."
Any interesting rituals before they played?
"Not sure. But it only happened after training. Katlego Mphela noticed that all the time after training, Tso Vilakazi would take his towel and his toiletries and head straight to the toilet.
"So he suggested we go and check him. So Mphela, Surprise Moriri, and Collins Mbesuma all went to check on Tso. And they found him doing his own thing [laughs]. They told him straight, hey Tso, these things don't work, my brother, just quit them."
Who was the jokester?
"While I was growing up and still at school, I viewed Surprise Moriri as the quiet type, but Surprise, he surprised me when I joined Sundowns. He was the one doing all the talking. He, Vuyo Mere, and Mike Manzini were always in the same mood."
Was it a muti-changeroom?
"During my stay at Sundowns, we never used any special product, even at SuperSport United we only used the holy water from ZCC. Thomas Madidage was still there. At Platinum Stars, it's where I experienced muti."
Who was the singer?
"Thuso Phala. What an unbelievable singer, even though he was mostly singing in Sesotho, he and Jackson Mabokgwane were good singers."
Who was the best dressed and worst dressed?
"At Mamelodi Sundowns, Robyn Johannes was very neat, all the time. At Platinum Stars, it was Henrico Botes.
"As for the worst dressed [laughs], I remember Sipho Jembula at Platinum Stars. He used to put on anything, he'd arrive for training sessions wearing the overalls. He'd tell you, ngiphum' ekasi mina."
Who never showered?
"Makhosonke Bhengu at Nathi Lions, he always said he is going to bath at home. For you to only see him in town five minutes later strolling. He hated taking a shower [laughs]."
Rate the coach's team talk.
"There's more than one. Gavin Hunt knows his story. He could calculate the points before the season even starts. Hristo Stoichkov, under him, we never repeated the same warm-up exercise twice; each day, it was a new one, he did that for the whole season. He was exceptional.
"Ted Dumitru, may his soul rest in peace, and the last one is Manqoba Mngqithi."
