Sundowns' hand forced, despite good news

Mamelodi Sundowns will have key decisions to make ahead of the start of the new season following the return of Bolivian midfielder Erwin Saavedra.

It has emerged Saavedra has only been on loan at Club Bolivar since the beginning of the year.

There was widespread belief that Saavedra had moved permanently following his troubles at Sundowns, where he struggled to make an impact during the first two years that he spent at the club.

The 28-year-old had a horror stay at Sundowns, managing only 10 appearances (totalling 265 minutes) in two years.

Saavedra went back to familiar surroundings at Club Bolivar in what is his third stint with the club from La Paz, Bolivia, who are aiming to win the league this year.

During his time back home, Saavedra played 13 games (791 minutes) and earned himself a national team recall ahead of the Copa America, before he was dropped for the final squad.

Bolivar have now confirmed that Saavedra is heading to Sundowns.

"Club Bolivar reports that Erwin Saavedra's 6-month loan has come to an end. The Mamelodi Sundowns club from South Africa has requested his reinstatement for the preseason.

"We wish Erwin the greatest success in this new stage of his career.

"We appreciate your commitment and dedication during your time with us and we trust that you will continue to stand out in your professional career," reads a statement from Bolivar.

Upon arriving back at Sundowns, Saavedra will join Brazilian pair Arthur de Oliviera Sales and Lucas Ribeiro Costa, along with Marcelo Allende (Chile), Matias Esquivel (Argentina), Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil and Ethiopian striker Abubeker Nasir as the foreign players on the club's books.

Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro has gone to yet another loan, at AmaZulu FC, while Uganda keeper Ismail Watenga will stay on loan at Golden Arrows.

According to the PSL rules, only five players can be registered with non-South African documentation.

This means Sundowns will have decisions to make about the five who get to be registered out of all those that are still contracted.

There is also talk that the club could make another foreign acquisition during this window.

Just like Nasir, Saavedra's situation has been confusing, with contrasting information coming from the club.
