Downs chasing number 15

The Tshwane derby will get the Betway Premiership business underway in the capital city with Mamelodi Sundowns having their eyes firmly placed on title number 15 of the PSL era years.

Sundowns will be the hosts at Loftus Versfeld against SuperSport United (19:30) in this contest pitting half of the four clubs that have been forever present in the top league from when it was played as the Castle Premiership, Absa Premiership and DStv Premiership through to the new Betway Premiership.

Part of the significance of Tuesday's fixture is that it will be the start of a new campaign with Sundowns being referred as champions for the seventh consecutive season.

Before winning seven in a row, The Brazilians had another seven to their name, pushing their tally to 14 on the count with their rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates both still on four each.

Whatever has happened during the off-season with Rulani Mokwena leaving and Manqoba Mngqithi taking over is secondary now for the Chloorkop-based side, who will want number eight in a row.

Since Amakhosi threw away the title on the last day during COVID, it has been no contest for Sundowns, winning the championship with point margins of 13, 16, 16 and 23 over teams that have finished second.

Whether they will be challenged this season, or the gap trimmed will be down to their rivals upping their game.

The Tshwane giants have already played in the MTN8 and CAF Champions League, where they are just about guaranteed of their place in the group stages for the 10th consecutive season.

As has been the case since 2002, it will be 30 league games to determine the first league winners under the Betway sponsorship.

After Tuesday's league opener, Sundowns have Marumo Gallants, Chiefs, Polokwane City and Cape Town City in the list of their first five games.

Mngqithi has the opportunity to win his first game as the sole head coach since joining as assistant to Pitso Mosimane in February 2014.
