How Jomo Sono plan to pay Jomo Cosmos players during Lockdown

Most football clubs are struggling to keep up with their players' salaries as they are no longer able to generate money, but Sono says no matter the circumstances, no one should go to bed hungry.

"Maybe what I could do for them is to say, 'Okay guys, because you are struggling, I can give you half now and then when we resume, I will give you another half.' Cosmos will do that because I feel if they don't get a cent it might be a problem for their families," Sono tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"You know I'd rather give something and give a letter to say, 'Look, once the league gets better, I will pay you back the balance.' But to not give anything, no... because we must understand they've got bonds, they've got cars, you know these people they like things... they like smart things.

"So, I'm thinking if it's tough, write a letter and give it to them so they keep it, to acknowledge that, 'Yes, I owe you five rand. Once things get better, I will give you the other five rand, finished.'

"We will discuss it with them and send a letter. We don't want to not pay them. But the problem will be the ones whose contracts are expiring in June. It's a bit challenging there you see. How are you going to pay them if they are no longer on your books?

"Unless if you have an option, then you exercise the option. But we will wait. We have confidence in the chairman [Dr Irvin Khoza] so we will wait."

Sono also touched on the issue of food parcels that are being donated by public figures to different communities.

"I think there must be a role for all of us," Sono says. "You know what people are saying about us players? I will wear another cap as an ex-player now... that us players we just want to take all the time, we never want to give.

"It's what they like to say about players. They still want to see players donating something. I think all of us as players should play a role in this, even clubs.

"You play a role in your heart because if you give, God will bless you. We have done things in KwaZulu-Natal where we donated food and so forth, but we didn't go publicly because we were doing it out of our good hearts.

"If you do something out of your heart, you don't have to tell the world. So I mean, if you give compliments to Baroka, Chiefs, Pirates and MultiChoice you must complement them for what they have done. But we've also done on the sides the little we could afford."
