Riveiro’s contract thumbs up at Pirates

The results posted by Orlando Pirates under Jose Riveiro have continue to place the Spaniard in firm position to become the first coach to last longer than three years at the club.

Two wins in the first two league games of a new season is a first for Riveiro since he took over at Pirates ahead of the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

It is also the first time that the club has won the opening two league matches since the 2016/17 season.

In that season, Bucs recorded victories against Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town but then were without a win in the next five, during which they suffered a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of SuperSport United, forcing Muhsin Ertugral to immediately step down.

This season, the Soweto giants are already through to the final of the MTN8 final and will become the first club to win this trophy three years in a row if they get past Stellenbosch FC on October 5 at Moses Mabhida.

The cherry on top is that they are also through to the group phase of the CAF Champions League.

Reaching this stage of the continent's premier club competition last happened during 2018/19.

Pirates are unbeaten in the opening nine games of the season with seven wins and two draws, with five wins in a row in the last five games.

"It is the first time as Pirates that we collect two victories in a row in the league at the beginning of the league since 2016, I think.

"So, we have to be happy with the performances and what we collected this week.

"We will now have time to rest and prepare for the next one," noted Riveiro after the 3-0 victory over Polokwane City on Tuesday.

The Spaniard has delivered four trophies in his first two years and has the MTN8, Carling Cup, Nedbank Cup, Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League to play for this season.

Matters relating to his contract will become topical as the season moves on.

Riveiro signed a three-year deal when he was handpicked for the job and has backed his push for an extension with results and trophies.
