Ex Mamelodi Sundowns defender Themba Mnguni survives car crash

snl24.com/kickoff had a word with Themba’s young brother Thokozani, who says the 39-year-old is set to make a full recovery.

“It happened on Sunday when he was travelling from Mamelodi with his two kids. Usually, they go to church on Sunday and from there, they pass by the family home to have lunch before he drives back to his house.

“He was actually waiting at a traffic light and when it turned green for him to go, another car that had skipped the robot hit his car. That’s how it happened,” Thokozani explains.

“He’s been trying to walk, but his head is still swollen. He has lots of stitches on his face, but we are glad he will be okay,” he adds.

In his heyday, Mnguni played 14 times for Bafana Bafana, and spent time at Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United after leaving Sundowns. To this day, he holds the record for most starts in a season for Sundowns.

He started 48 matches in all competitions for the Brazilians during the 1997/98 season, when Sundowns won the first of their three League titles in a row in the late 1990s.
