Du Preez has joined Chiefs through their lowest point after seven years without silverware and will be looked upon to provide the revival under Arthur Zwane.
The 24-year-old has only ever played for hometown club Stellenbosch FC.
"He must just put his head down and forget about Cape Town or whatever is happening back home," says Shaun Permall who took a similar part in moving from the Western Cape to Chiefs in 2001.
Permall joined from Ajax Cape Town and lasted two years with AmaKhosi.
"A lot of the players from this part of the world miss Cape Town too much and they just keep thinking about being back here at every moment that they get instead of focusing on what they need to be doing in the job they have in Jo'burg.
"My advice for him will be to focus on what he needs to do there because he will need to adjust to the new club and new atmosphere.
"Chiefs is the biggest club in the country, and he needs not to worry about being back home because for me that is what a lot of the players from this side struggle with.
"When I went to Jo'burg I didn't worry but then with every opportunity that I got, I was back home.
"As a human, you will miss home, especially at that level after having signed for Chiefs as a big player you will want to come home so that everyone can say 'there is Shaun Permall from Kaizer Chiefs," says Permall.
The retired forward also played upfront scoring seven goals in 19 starts before moving to Moroka Swallows.
"Jo'burg is different to Cape Town, and it will swallow you up and then spit you out.
"So, he needs to focus on what he needs to do and work hard to become the best.
"He has signed for the biggest club in the country but there is still more work to be done.
"Never ever stop working hard because the demands are different even though football remains the same.
"The magnitude of the club determines the expectations. When I went to Chiefs you had to grab your chance and hold it with both hands because if you lose focus then you are out and gone.
"That space is ruthless. It is either you fit in, or you are gone.
"The quicker he becomes more focused and wraps his fingers around it then the better for him. I believe he is a good player, and he will do well at Chiefs. I think Arthur Zwane is going a different route in the way they will play with pace and aggression defining their play in attack," adds Permall.
