Story Behind My Nickname: Rodney 'Danger' Thobejane

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Rodney Thobejane reveals how he was accidentally given the nickname 'Danger'.

Thobejane was part of the impressive Amakhosi team in head coach Muhsin Ertugral's first stint at the club in the early 2000s.

"To be honest, you know I got this name from my mom and dad," Thobejane tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"It's not like it's in my identity document though, remember, culturally we go to the mountains, and when you come back, they happen to change your initial name and give you a new one that previously belonged to your grandfathers or uncles and so on.

"So actually it's not 'Danger', it's just that people like speaking English, you know.

"My name in SeSotho is 'Tensha', not 'Danger'. It means harassment. I'm not sure if they used to harass my mother or the family. So when I was born, she decided to give me the name Tensha. But people changed it to 'Danger'.

"It all started when I was two seconds old. My mom once told me there was a stage where she was not happy in her marriage.

"My father's siblings used to give her a tough time, you understand. She never had peace when I was about to be born.

"I ended up accepting the 'Danger' nickname because everyone in the streets started calling me Danger. Even my children now call me Danger."
