2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers: Hugo Broos pleased with Bafana Bafana progress

Hugo Broos has reacted to South Africa's victory over Ghana on Monday, which has seen Bafana Bafana climb to the top of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification group.

South Africa's hopes of taking part in next year's World Cup tournament in Qatar received a massive boost on Monday after the national team recorded an impressive 1-0 win over the Black Stars, courtesy of a late strike from Maritzburg United star Bongokuhle Hlongwane.

The result has seen Bafana Bafana climb to the top of the Group G qualification standings ahead of Ghana with four points after Broos' charges previously opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in Harare on Friday.

"I'm very proud and happy today after what I saw from my team," the Belgian tactician said post-match. "We made huge progress in one week. When I saw my team play in Zimbabwe there was no confidence, no determination, no belief in themselves.

"But what I saw today, I saw a team with confidence who played a very good game. There was determination, a will to win, discipline, and that's what I like. So, we have four points from a possible six now, a few days ago I said if we had four from six I will be very happy.

"I thought that we could win in Zimbabwe and play for a draw against Ghana but it's the contrary now so I'm not unhappy about that. If we can go on like this and continue making progress like we did in this week we will see where we will end at the end of the race."

South Africa will next face Ethiopia in a double-header at the start of October, with the time, dates and venues of those clashes yet to be confirmed.
