Barker: A great point against a great team

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker was full of praise for his charges after securing a point against DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns dropped points for the first time in 16 games after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Stellies.

The Brazilians broke the deadlock with 13 minutes to go through late substitute Cassius Mailula but the Cape Winelands outfit levelled matters in stoppage time via a penalty scored by Iqraam Rayners three minutes before time.

Barker suggested that they got the better of Sundowns tactically, as they did not create many chances and praised his charges for their efforts.

"For me I think a very accomplished performance by us, I thought tactically we were really astute today," Barker said on SuperSport TV.

"The unfortunate part is we know all their tactics well and we denied them spaces, they didn't have that many chances and then we conceded, you know from a set-piece and that was an unfortunate part.

"So I think we deserved the minimum point, the fact that we managed to get a point for we was just a great team effort, tactically really well drilled and executed plan well.

"I thought the first 20, 25 minutes we started the game really well, just before halftime they had a bit of a period where they  had one or two chances and the conditions did not make it that easy either.

"But ja, a great point against a really good team, so we can lay a foundation for us just to continue going forward."

The veteran mentor also applauded his substitutes for making a difference after coming on from the bench and thanked their supporters for coming out in numbers at the Danie Craven Stadium.

"It's nice when the reserves come and make an impact, Antonio Van Wyk was unfortunate, almost with his first touch, (Sinethemba) Mngomezulu was involved in the build-up to the goal," he added.

"I thought Andre De Jong did really well, it's nice when you're able to bring players in these type of conditions to help us freshen things up a bit, so credit to everybody, the support from the players that didn't get the opportunity was really good.

"We just want to go out there every home game and play with our hearts on our sleeve and play for the fans and the community of Stellenbosch.

"Thank you to them for coming out in numbers and supporting us, so ja I think it was a good day for the football club today."
