Man City advance to another FA Cup final

Manchester City progressed to the final of the FA Cup after overcoming Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the semi-finals on Sunday evening.

The Cityzens restored Jack Grealish, Rico Lewis and Savinho and dropped Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan to the bench, while Ederson was sacrificed for Stefan Ortega in goal.

Lewis got City off to the perfect start two minutes in when he guided a reverse pass from Mateo Kovacic into the bottom-corner from the edge of the box.

It was all City at this stage and a short run-up to the area by Kovacic opened up Forest, who fortunately enough saw Murillo hurry back and cleared their lines.

The pressure from the Cityzens continued towards the closing stages to halftime as Nico O’Reilly turned Danilo to get goal-side and unleash a shot, but Matz Sels parried.

Forest enjoyed a positive spell where Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi came together to tee-up Chris Wood, but Josko Gvardiol read the danger and cleared effectively.

Forest manager Nuno Esporito Santo refreshed his personnel at the start of the second half and introduced Anthony Elanga in the place of Danilo.

Elanga missed out on a dream entry when he found space around the area and steered a cross-field pass from Hudson-Odoi well wide with the goal at his mercy.

City extended the lead five minutes later after a corner-kick from Omar Marmoush found a rising Gvardiol, who powered in emphatically.

Gibbs-White nearly halved the advantage around the latter phase of the half with a first-time volley from Elanga’s cross, but he found the woodwork.

The Forest midfielder missed another sitter a little later when he retrieved a loose ball from Gvardiol and rounded Ortega for a simple finish, but found the upright.

City continued to live on the edge in the last ten minutes as the woodwork denied Forest again through a smart attempt by Taiwo Awoniyi.

However, Pep Guardiola’s boys did enough to see out the clash and a spot in the final where they will face Crystal Palace on 17 May.
