Premier League match report Liverpool v Everton 24 April 2022

Liverpool earned a 12th successive home win in the Premier League following a 2-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday evening.

There was no headline team news for Liverpool, but a late change forced Everton to start Michael Keane in place of Ben Godfrey who got injured in the warm-up.

It was a quiet opening where both the Reds nor the Toffees struggled to find joy up top, with the first shot in anger seeing Sadio Mane slam a loose pass after 20 minutes over the top.

Everton obtained some momentum before the closing exchanges of the first spell and went inches away from the deadlock through a low first-time shot from Abdoulaye Doucoure.

It remained a tough and gruelling affair in the second half for the Reds, who still found it difficult to penetrate the stubborn defensive shape of Everton.

Here are the highest-paid players in the Premier League this season:

The Reds addressed this barrier 60 minutes in the second half with a double substitution that saw Luis Diaz replace Mane and Keita removed for Divock Origi.

This inadvertently reaped rewards as the Reds surged ahead two minutes later when Andrew Robertson found space in the box and headed home Mohamed Salah's teasing cross.

Liverpool were fired up thereafter and targeted a second, but Allan cleared Joel Matip's teasing attempt from close-range off the line before Salah volleyed the follow-up over.

The title-chasing Reds finally made the points safe in the last eight minutes after Origi helped an acrobatic attempt from Diaz past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Everton applied some amount of pressure late on in the match, but the Reds managed play and earned the victory.
