Carles Puyol: Lionel Messi is in the best place

Former FC Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has revealed the topic of his recent discussion with Lionel Messi.

In an interview with RAC 1 h.t Marca, the former Blaugrana skipper revealed that Messi, whose contract at Barca expires at the end of the season, was in a good frame of mind despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

"I spoke to him recently, when he equalled Xavi [Hernandez's appearance record]," Puyol said. "I see him well and with enthusiasm. I think he's in the best place but each individual decides what they want and we have to understand and respect the decision he makes."

Messi, who was at the centre of a protracted transfer saga at the start of the season, is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Nou Camp and has been linked with a move to either Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City.

Last month, the record six-time Ballon d'Or winner reportedly revealed to Goal that he had not yet held discussions with any other club and that he would only be making a decision on whether or not he will leave the Catalans once the season has drawn to a close.

The 33-year-old was previously widely expected to end his 21-year affiliation with the club but the mood around the Barca camp is believed to have changed following the appointment of Joan Laporta's appointment as the new club president earlier this month.
