Lionel Messi urged to honour Diego Maradona by joining Napoli

Maradona, who passed away at the age of 60 last month, is widely regarded as Napoli's greatest-ever player following his exploits with the Serie A outfit during the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s.

The legendary Argentine forward scored a then-club record 115 goals during his time in Naples to inspire the club to its only two league titles in the 1986/87 and 1989/90 seasons, as well as the UEFA Cup title in the latter campaign.

In the year 2000, and in honour of Maradona's contribution to the club, Napoli retired the No. 10 jersey he wore during his time at the now-Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with no player having worn it since.

However, former AC Milan star Kevin-Prince Boateng has urged FC Barcelona captain Messi to request a move to Napoli and ask to wear the iconic kit when his deal with the Catalan giants ends in June next year.

"'They don't give out the No. 10 shirt anymore, [but] I would love to honour Maradona's No.10 and I would love to come and play one year or two years at Naples, without thinking about money or nothing, just heart.'

"It would be like a movie, he'd have to go to practice by a f--king helicopter because people would eat him alive. They'd be so happy. But just that story, 'In honour of Maradona, I will come and play for Naples', what kind of story would that be for the world, not only for football, for the world?

"It would be a message, it would be history everywhere. I just wish I would be in Messi's shoes. I want to be Messi. I would call the president of Naples and I would tell him."
