Serie A match report Inter vs AC Milan

Inter Milan's unbeaten run in Serie A came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of city rivals AC Milan on Saturday evening.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned a recall for Milan after a four week absence, as Inter showed up with Arturo Vidal, Achraf Hakimi and Marcelo Brozovic with Christian Eriksen on the bench.

Milan were on the front foot in 12 minutes when Ibrahimovic won a penalty after going down under Aleksandar Kolarov's challenge and stepped to convert albeit on the rebound.

Ibrahimovic had a second three minutes later after side-footing Rafael Leao's low cross to the back-post beyond the reach of Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Inter received a lifeline when a cross from the left by Ivan Perisic minutes to the half-hour mark picked out an unmarked Romelu Lukaku, who tapped into an unguarded net.

The hosts should've levelled a little later when Lautaro Martinez had his header cleared off the goal-line before Nicolo Barella fired down the throat of Gianluigi Donnarumma off a one-two.

Inter looked for a strong start to the second half and had Martinez drilling over the top from range after a combination with Barella.

The Nerazzurri should've drawn level right before the 60th minute when Hakimi beat the offside trap only to direct Vidal's diagonal ball wide of the far corner.

Stefano Pioli looked to preserve the lead towards the closing quarter with two substitutions in Rade Krunic and Samu Castillejo, who replaced Leao and Alexis Saelemaekers.

Inter had a penalty-kick overturned in the last 15 minutes after Donnarumma brought down Lukaku with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) arguing an offside in the build-up.

The visitors looked to kill off the contest through Castillejo with Lukaku threatened an equaliser in the closing stages, but 2-1 was how it finished.
