EXCLUSIVE | Sundowns player allegedly tests positive for illegal substance

In news that will send shockwaves through the local football landscape, a Mamelodi Sundowns player is believed to have allegedly tested positive for an illegal substance.

The unidentified player - whose identity is known to KickOff - has reportedly been suspended by the club after allegedly testing positive for recreational drug use.

The player has been a notable absentee from the last three Sundowns matchday squads in the CAF Champions League against Al Hilal, Coton Sport, and Saturday's blockbuster Al Ahly clash.

KickOff has learnt that Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to reshuffle their squad after the surprise positive test result that sent shockwaves through the club.

"There are serious allegations regarding one player that has tested positive for a recreational drug at Sundowns," a source close to the situation informs KickOff.

"Please speak to the club and find out."

This publication also spoken to several sources who also verified the allegations.

KickOff also previously reported that the player in question was excluded from previous matchday squads for non-football-related reasons.

In startling revelations, the player in question has an alleged well-known history of substance abuse.

This, continues a worrying trend in local football of players and substance abuse. Several incidents believed to have occurred in recent years have been allegedly handled by clubs to protect their players, who are valuable assets, by reportedly covering up indiscretions.

In recent history, former Bafana Bafana defender Mbulelo Mabizela was once banned from football for six months after testing positive for marijuana while at Sundowns back in 2006.

Former Benoni Premier United player Masixolele May, and former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thandanani Ntshumayelo were also banned from football for lengthy periods for similar indiscretions.

Sundowns were contacted and after lengthy discussions chose not to provide comment.

The player's agent, was also contacted but also chose not to comment.
