Bayern legend tears into PSG over 'helpless & desperate' Messi

Bayern Munich legend Philipp Lahm has slammed Paris Saint-Germain for not being being "good" and accused the club of leaving Lionel Messi "helpless and desperate."

The French giants were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for the second successive season, while remarkably boasting an attacking trio comprising Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar, albeit the latter was not available during their most recent second-leg tie again Bayern.

Despite huge investment on big-name players since the Qatari owners took over the club in 2011, the Parisians have consistently fallen short of winning the Europe's most elite competition, only managing to reach the final once in 2019/20 under Thomas Tuchel.

Lahm has now provided a scathing assessment of the Ligue 1 outfit, while suggesting that Messi has become a casualty of the club's lackluster ways.

"The individuals at PSG simply do not know how to collectively score a goal and, generally, how to contribute. Messi was helpless and desperate at the Allianz Arena [on 8 March]," the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner told The Guardian.

"One can feel sorry for PSG fans. Their hope that something will grow together dies anew every year. They surely believe in something else. PSG are as far away as ever from something to love, despite years of investment.

"This exorbitantly expensive team resemble a luxury department store, displaying precious exhibits that everyone marvels at but no one can afford."It guarantees high attention and spectacle, but only works economically. If so much money is spent but the opposite of quality is achieved, that is not good."

He added: "Great teams that people identify with develop in a process. This can only succeed with cooperation, solidarity and community.

"These are the values of Europe, but not of PSG."
