Money Matters: 4 African stars whose values have dropped in 2024

With the 2023/24 mid-season break approaching its conclusion, several top African stars have seen their values plummet, including high-profile names in the DStv Premiership such as Keagan Dolly.

Various domestic top flights on the continent are set to resume their campaign after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations reaches its climax on Sunday, 11 February, in the Ivory Coast.

While the thrilling festivity of the tournament has put club football on the backseat, several players have a point to prove for the remainder of the season as their market worths from a financial standpoint at least  have diminished.

Based on Transfermarkt's recent player market value update, Dolly and three other high-profile African stars on the continent have seen a drop in value as of 1 January 2024.

Keagan Dolly (Kaizer Chiefs)

The skilful winger is now worth €300 000 (R6.1 million) less than he was last year, with his value having taken a sizable decrease of 21.4%. The 31-year-old has been riddled with injuries, leaving him with just five appearances for Kaizer Chiefs this season in all competitions. Dolly last featured for Amakhosi back in August 2023 and his absence from the pitch also resulted in him missing out on a potential call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the ongoing AFCON. Since his arrival in Naturena in 2021, the Johannesburg-born attacker has made 64 appearances, registering 14 goals and 11 assists in the process.

Peter Shalulile (Mamelodi Sundowns)

The Mamelodi Sundowns shooter is still worth a lofty €2.2 million (R44.8 million), although this figure has dropped by 12% since the turn of the year. So far this season, he has contributed nine goals and two assists in 19 outings for Downs, which would mathematically see him fall short of his 2022/23 output of 23 goals and five assists in 32 games in all competitions. It should be noted that this decline in value is yet to take his performances for Namibia's AFCON campaign into account as his value was updated right before the tournament kicked off.

Ali Maaloul (Al Ahly)

The Al Ahly veteran recorded a 25% drop in his market value, bringing his value down to €900 000 (R18.3 million). The veteran has been left out of the team on seven occasions this term and now finds himself in the twilight years of his career, aged 32. The five-time Egyptian Premier League winner did, however, chip in with two goals at the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup to help his side claim yet another bronze medal.

Yahya Jabrane (Wydad Casablanca)

The Moroccan defensive maestro is now worth 11.8% less than his previous market value, with his recommended price now just €1.5 million (30 million). The Wydad Casablanca man also finds himself on the wrong side of 30, although his role in the team has seemingly not been reduced. This term, he has made 24 appearances in all competitions, contributing with three goals and four assists in the process. He was unfortunately part of the Wydad side that lost the African Football League final to Sundowns in November 2023, though.
