Stellies down AS Vita, edge closer to CCC group stages

Stellenbosch FC recorded a 2-0 win over AS Vita in their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round first leg on Friday evening.

Familiar faces for the Maroons saw Fawaaz Basadien, Jayden Adams, Devon Titus, Lehlohonolo Mojela, Sage Stephens and Andre De Jong start from the onset.

It was a strong start for the host as Thabo Moloisane made a decent leap to get on the end of a delivery and nodded in on seven minutes played.

That didn't end there, with a second goal coming five minutes later when Mojela managed to find the time and space to slot home and continued his perfect run of form since joining the club.

Mojela continued to cause danger around the half-hour mark and drilled a probing delivery from a tight angle narrowly across the face of goal as Titus mis-timed it by a mere inches.

Vita, who were extremely underwhelming at this stage, battled to find courage from the difficult opening period as the Maroons enjoyed total control of matters.

The second half didn't get off to the same pace as the first but the Maroons maintained ascendancy and left the visitors to chase shadows.

Ibraheem Jabaar came close to extending the home side's lead midway through half with a point-blank attempt, but he saw his effort smothered off the goal-line.

Coach Steve Barker did make two substitutions in the latter stages, with Adams and De Jong coming off for new signing Ashley Cupido and Genino Palace to enter.

Vita weren't able to cause decent danger in the closing exchanges thus left the Maroons to a comfortable victory in the end.

Confirmed line-ups:

Stellenbosch: Stephens, Moloisane, Toure, Mcaba, Basadien, Nduli, Adams, Jabaar, De Jong, Titus, Mojela.

Subs: Masuluke, Onyango, Mdaka, Jurgens, Phili, Smith, Palace, Cupido
