BANNED: Argentina star punished by FIFA

One of Argentina's key performers has received a punishment from FIFA after his recent behaviour.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will miss the world champions' next two 2026 World Cup qualifiers for two incidents while on duty.

The Aston Villa shot-stopper was punished for clashing with a camera operator after Argentina's loss to Colombia last month.

The second incident came during the nation's Copa America trophy parade when he repeated his infamous lewd celebration with the trophy.

Martinez will now miss Argentina's next World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Boliva next month, with the Argentine Football Association disagreeing with the punishment.

"Despite the defense made by the player and the Argentine Football Association, the Disciplinary Commission of the governing body of World Football made the following decision," the AFA said in a statement.

"Martinez is declared responsible for his offensive behavior and his violation of the principles of fair play (art. 13 CDF).

"It should be noted that the Argentine Football Association expresses its absolute disagreement with the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee."
