Ex-Liverpool player to join African giants?

A former Liverpool player is reportedly on course to join one of Africa's biggest clubs.

Over the past couple of seasons, it has become increasingly common for stars to leave European football to ply their trade in Africa.

Last year, French footballer Anthony Modeste joined Al Ahly after parting ways with German giants Borussia Dortmund.

Moreover, this season, French-born Senegalese star M'Baye Niang joined Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club on a free transfer from Italian outfit Empoli, with the move ensuring that the forward plays his club football in Africa for the first time.

The trend looks set to continue with a Liverpool academy graduate looking poised to join an African club, according to reports.

Former England U21 star Ovie Ejaria is set to undergo a trial with Zamalek in the coming days, as per KingFut.

The 26-year-old has been without a club since leaving English second-tier side Reading in January this year.

It is said Ejaria will train in Egypt until the Egyptian Super Cup on 20 October, and should he perform well, he will be granted a contract with Zamalek, who recently won the 2024 CAF Super Cup.

The midfielder was on the books of Liverpool from 2014 until 2020, although his time at the Merseyside club was split into loan spells at Sunderland, Rangers, and Reading, whom he eventually joined permanently in the 2020/21 season in a move worth €3.9 million (R74.4 million).

In total, Ejaria made only eight appearances for the Liverpool first team, and featured 127 times for Reading, contributing with nine goals and 13 assists for the Royals.

He was also part of the England U20 team that won the 2017 FIFA World Cup, a squad that comprised the likes of Dominic Solanke, Ademola Lookman and Dean Henderson.

Should Ejaria's trial be a success, he will not be the first player this season to join Zamalek after a stint in Europe, with the club having also signed Omar Faraj from Swedish outfit AIK and Mahmoud Bentayg from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne on loan.
