OFFICIAL: Mokwana’s boss sacked

Elias Mokwana's new club has officially sacked their head coach just five games into the 2024/25 league season.

The confirmation of Miguel Cardoso's departure from Esperance comes as little surprise, as it was extensively reported in the previous few days that he was facing the sack amid an underwhelming start to the latest Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 campaign.

Cardoso was appointed in January this year on a short-term deal, but after he guided the team the 2023/24 league title, the final of the CAF Champions League, and qualify for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, he was rewarded with a contract extension until June 2026.

Things have changed quickly, however, as growing pressure from the club's hierarchy and supporters have since culminated in his dismissal.

"Recent setbacks in Ligue 1 and relentless external pressure have taken their toll on this relationship of trust. Cardoso's dismissal, announced today, ends a short but emotionally charged adventure," a statement on the club's official website reads.

"In thanking him, the club also ended the collaboration with his entire technical staff.

"To replace him, Esperance de Tunis has called upon a familiar face: Skander Kasri. The latter will take over on an interim basis while the board of directors decides on the identity of the future coach who will lead the team to new successes.

"This choice is a turning point for Esperance, which is about to enter a crucial phase of the season. While the results in Ligue 1 have tipped the balance against Cardoso, his accomplishments deserve to be highlighted.

"He has managed to breathe new competitive life into a team seeking to regain its former glory. His professionalism and passion have marked the players and supporters, who will remember him as a dedicated leader.

"The club would like to warmly thank Miguel Cardoso and his staff for their unwavering dedication and for the unforgettable moments experienced under their leadership, aware that, despite recent turbulence, the shared history between the Portuguese coach and Esperance will leave a lasting impression."

With South Africa's Mokwana having failed to register a start under Cardoso, he will be hoping his fortunes change under whoever the next manager will be.
