Manqoba: I can't blame Mudau alone...

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi did not want to single out any of his players after the defeat to Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout final.

Rayners broke the deadlock for Sundowns ten minutes before the break but Tshepo Kakora levelled matters for Magesi early in the second stanza.

Delano snatched the famous winner for Dikwena in the dying minutes, as they upset heavy favourites Masandawana to lift the trophy for the first time.

"I think we were just unfortunate. I think the universe had called it, because I think we tried everything we could to win the match. We dominated, we were in confrontation with their box regularly, we had a lot of shots at goal and on target," Mngqithi told SuperSport TV.

"[Elvis] Chipezeze did very well. There were a few moments I felt maybe the decision-making in the final third, where I thought it could've been a pass instead of a shot and shot instead of a pass. Those small details.

"But I think the boys did very well, they did everything that one wanted but we made two critical mistakes. One, we knew we could not give Chirambadare space and time because he's got a very good left foot and he always puts the ball into the box.

"Most of their goals are coming from Chirambadare, either on set-pieces or crosses from open play and we knew we would not give him time to put the ball into the box and unfortunately we gave him that time."

The 53-year-old coach was tempted to blame experienced players for not dealing with crosses in the two goals they conceded.

"I have not seen the video of what happened in the box but when you allow crosses against a team like this you're inviting problems. The truth of the matter is we did everything to win the match but unfortunately when you don't take your chances, the decision-making is poor, you can't defend well in critical phases, because we knew in advance they are very good on set-pieces," Mngqithi went on.

"It was unfortunate that our best players are the ones who could've maybe saved the situation, because I believe [Khuliso] Mudau had all the time to close that cross.

"But I can't blame Mudau alone because we also knew that the cross will go to far post and we have to make sure that we are marking man-to-man but unfortunately we were caught. Congratulations to Clinton, I think his game plan worked.

"Because they are very clinical, it's not funny. They don't create too many chances but the few chances they create, I don't even remember them missing a chance but the few they get they put them in.

"But honestly speaking, I cannot blame the team for not fighting. I believe they did everything to try and win the match."
