Klopp: The Club World Cup is useless

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed that the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is "useless".

The newly expanded 32-team format of the Club World Cup has been met with strong opposition from various football organisations, players, and coaches.

Much of the criticism comes from Europe, with arguments that the football calendar is already overcrowded, and the staging of the Club World Cup will only worsen concerns about player welfare.

Over the past year, players such as Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri have voiced concerns about the congested schedule.

Former Reds boss Klopp is the latest to weigh in on the matter, labelling the competition as "useless", according to CT Insider.

"I think it's useless. It doesn't help if you have no summer break," Klopp said, referring to players who participate in tournaments such as the World Cup, European Championship, Copa America, or other international competitions.

"Whoever wins the tournament is the poorest winner of all time because they have to play throughout the summer, and then the league starts again.

"We now have a lot of injuries in European football.

"We need to reduce the number of games. That means, in some leagues, it would be better to have 18 teams instead of 20. In other competitions, you don't add more games."

The Club World Cup will see four African nations competing, namely Sundowns, Al Ahly, Espérance de Tunis, and Wydad Athletic Club.

Notably, Liverpool will not be among the teams participating in the tournament, which is set to take place in the United States in June 2025.
