Trouble in paradise for Chiefs strikers

Kaizer Chiefs' failure to have a striker with double figures on the league scoring charts appears all too certain to continue for the fifth consecutive season.

Chiefs' leading scorers in the Betway Premiership at the two-thirds mark (20 games) have four goals each.

They are Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba.

For the rest of those expected to score goals, Ranga Chivaviro has three, just like Ashley Du Preez.

Glody Makabi Lilepo also already has three in the league playing from the wing after only arriving at the end of January.

Tashreeq Morris has done little in terms of goals to date since being signed mid-season as well.

The failure to have a reliable and regular goal scorer has contributed to the catalogue of issues that have left Chiefs without silverware for 10 years.

In the period since the team's last trophy, they have only had one player – Samir Nurkovic – getting into double scoring figures in the league.

This was in the 2019/20 campaign when the Serbian scored 13 in the league, and the evidence of the difference those goals made was in that they missed out on the title to Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 30 minutes.

Besides that one season, it has been so bad that four goals have been enough for one to be the top scorer in the league at Amakhosi, like was the case last season and in the 2017/18 campaign.

They fared better in the first 10 years since Collins Mbesuma hammered 25, having players reaching double figures on the scoring charts in half those years.
