Sundowns get plugged into league risk

Mamelodi Sundowns could be left with the risk of not playing any domestic league football throughout the month of April, throwing their Betway Premiership finish into uncertainty.

Sundowns are back in action tonight (Friday) against Sekhukhune United in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup, a game which was meant to have been played three weeks ago.

Should they proceed, then they will play in the semi-finals against Kaizer Chiefs on the weekend of April 12/13.

From the Nedbank Cup tonight, there is the CAF Champions League - which is the priority competition for Miguel Cardoso's team.

The Brazilians play the first leg of their quarterfinal against Esperance de Tunis on Tuesday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.

After that, they will engage in the long trip to the Tunisian capital for the second leg to be played on Tuesday, April 8.

Straight after that, they will fly back home to play Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup, this will be provided they get past Sekhukhune at Lucas Moripe tonight.

April 18/19 is a CAF Champions League semi-final first leg date, just like April 25/26, which is slotted as the second leg date.

Should Sundowns be in the semi-finals of the Champions League, then their scheduled league matches against Royal AM (April 18) and Richards Bay FC (April 26) will have to make way.

Those are the two league matches that the Tshwane giants are to fixtured to play in April.

If they have gone through, then the Champions League semi-final will be against either Al Ahly or Al Hilal, which means a trip to either Cairo, Egypt or Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Al Hilal have set base in Mauritania, where they are playing in that country's domestic league due to the civil war back home in Sudan.

The consequences of progressing further to the Nedbank Cup final will mean May 10 is booked for that decider.

Then, should they also be in the Champions League final, then May 24 and June 1 will be the dates for those two legs.

Sundowns have seven league matches to play and will then depart for the Club World Cup in USA from June 14-July 13 after the June FIFA dates (June 2-10).

The Brazilians last played a league match in their 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates on March 16.
